Selective Entry High School Exam Preparation
Victorian Selective Entry Schools cater to ‘academically high-achieving students in years 9 to 12’ (Victorian Selective Entry High Schools). Over the years, the entry process has become increasingly competitive with more than 5,000 applicants in 2024. Year 8 students may sit the exam for Year 9 Entry, whilst Year 9 students may sit the exam for Year 10 Entry. Please note that the enrolment processes differ between Years 9 and 10.
While equitable and discretionary factors determine a minority of offers, 85% of each school’s Year 9 enrolment is based on the candidate’s performance in the exam (Victorian Selective Entry High Schools).

Please note: ACER does not release the specific question count of the upcoming exam, this may be subject to change from year to year.
About the Exam
All applicants must sit a series of written tests facilitated by ACER, typically in mid-June. Preparation material catered to the older, EduTest format may not be as representative of the new format’s questions.
The examination includes five key tests.
Reading Comprehension
A multiple choice test measuring the ability to understand, interpret and analyse written texts.
(40 to 45 Questions in 30 Minutes)
Verbal Reasoning
A multiple choice test measuring the ability to think and reason using words.
(60 Questions in 30 Minutes)
Writing
A written test measuring written communication skills in response to a creative and persuasive prompt.
(2 Prompts in 40 Minutes)
Mathematics
A multiple choice test measuring mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
(50 to 60 Questions in 30 Minutes)
Numerical Reasoning
A multiple choice test measuring the ability to think and reason using numbers.

Our Selective Entry Program
Our Selective Entry Program spans 20 weeks and is divided into two stages: (1) specialised weekly lessons tailored to each test type, and (2) Mock Exam Days. Spartan Tuition’s comprehensive curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed.
Please note: The Selective Entry Preparation Program is currently available only to Year 8 students preparing for the Year 9 entry exam.

Students will apply their new knowledge and techniques in a complete practice test that simulates the real test's format and difficulty.

Weeks 17 to 20
From Weeks 17 to 20 of the Comprehensive 20-week Program, normal lessons will be replaced with full Mock Exam Days. Each Mock Exam Day will follow the schedule of real exam:
Reading Comprehension - 35 minutes
Mathematics - 30 minutes
Short Break - 20 minutes
Verbal Reasoning - 30 minutes
Numerical Reasoning - 30 minutes
Short Break - 5 minutes
Writing - 40 minutes
Results and explanations will be provided after each Mock Exam Day is complete.

We generally recommend that students enrol in all 5 components of the program. In doing so, students will maximise their performance across all elements of the exam, increasing their likelihood of reciving an offer.
